The Essex Region Conservation Authority was established in 1973 to protect and restore natural resources of the region. Our jurisdiction includes 9 municipalities – Windsor, all of Essex County and Pelee Island. We take a hands-on approach to the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources in the Essex Region.
All of ERCA’s projects and programs surround our most elementary goal: trying to achieve sustainable future for this region. The United Nations has stated that at a minimum, every region must consist of at least 12% natural areas coverage in order for it to be healthy and sustainable. In the Essex Region, merely 7.5% of our region’s landscape consists of natural areas. There is much work to do in order to achieve a future of sustainability for our children and grandchildren.
ERCA works with community groups, landowner, schools, businesses, organizations and all levels of government to implement a diverse range of environmental projects. Our five strategic priorities are protecting and restoring water, protecting and enhancing biodiversity, protecting homes and people from flood and erosion, providing conservation education and nature based recreational opportunities.
